The Metapoetic Mirror

A project by Elena Demi-dova and Dmitry Soshnikov

“The Metapoetic Mirror” (formerly PFS: Poetic Feedback System) is an artistic project that merges technology and poetry for self-reflection. It functions as a digital tool that not only shows your reflection but also translates it into a poetic plane using neural network technologies.

In the first version of the project (“Poetic Feedback System”), neural networks were used to analyze people’s emotions, along with Optical Flow technology to detect viewer movement. Based on this, a responsive poetic message was generated using lines from classical Japanese poetry.

In the latest version (“The Metapoetic Mirror”), a modern Visual Language Model (VLM) is additionally employed. It analyzes the image as a whole and independently forms a poetic response based on various characteristics of what it sees and samples of poetic fragments.

Thus, the first neural network provides an abstract, figurative view of the viewer, while the VLM offers a more “documentary” poetic description of their state and image.

In this way, the mirror offers you three perspectives at once: your real reflection and two complementary poetic commentaries from artificial intelligence. This project explores how technologies learn to see, categorize, and assess a person, transforming biological feedback into an act of poetic interpretation.
